The elevator doors slid shut, leaving Frank face-to-face with the impossible sight of his own former body. He stared at the thirty-year-old man with an average build and familiar face, dressed in Frank’s casual clothes, then frantically pointed at him.
“You stole my body!” Frank shouted. “I want it back!”
The young woman whose body Frank now inhabited looked down at herself in disbelief. A light blue sports bra was layered over a dark navy sports bra, their straps and underband partially visible beneath the bright pink, high-waisted athletic leggings that ended just below her knees. Pale pink crew socks and matching athletic sneakers completed the outfit.
The man wearing Frank’s body simply scoffed.
“You didn't seem to mind my body when you were staring at me,” he said.
Frank froze. “I was looking because something weird was happening!”
“Sure you were.”
“I wasn't—” Frank stopped, realizing how ridiculous the argument sounded. “That doesn't mean you get to keep my body!”
The stranger leaned casually against the elevator wall, wearing Frank’s familiar expression with infuriating ease. “And apparently you don't get to keep mine.”
Frank glanced at the mirrored elevator doors. The reflection showed a twenty-two-year-old woman staring back at him, looking just as bewildered as he felt.
“This is a nightmare,” Frank muttered.
The elevator chimed as it reached the next floor.
Neither of them moved.
